Introducing the MISHA® Knee System at Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group
MISHA®, the first implantable shock absorber (ISA) that reduces weight on the knee joint, easing pain, preserving function, and possibly delaying joint replacement surgery. Dr. Daniel R. Howard is the first in Connecticut to implant this cutting-edge technology on designated patients, which was recently granted market authorization by the FDA.
“Many patients with knee osteoarthritis fall into a challenging middle ground between conservative treatment and joint replacement. Introducing the MISHA® Knee System into our practice gives us another tool to consider when determining an individualized plan for each patient." — Daniel R. Howard, MD, FAAOS
About the MISHA Knee System
The MISHA Knee System is an implantable shock absorber that is designed to relieve pain and improve function in patients with medial knee osteoarthritis. The MISHA Knee System works like a car shock absorber, reducing the peak forces on painful knee joints during activities such as walking, running, or simply standing. The device is placed under the skin, but outside the joint, during an outpatient procedure.
The MISHA Knee System is a REVOLUTIONARY implant for patients suffering from painful knee OA. Knee joint overload can lead to the initiation or progression of OA. Unloading the joint can allow the knee to thrive in a more favorable mechanical environment, resulting in reduced pain and symptoms.
The MISHA Knee System is INTELLIGENTLY designed with patients in mind. Placed under the skin, but outside the joint itself, in an outpatient setting, the procedure does not impose restrictions on weight bearing or return to activity.
How It Works
Overloading the knee joint can lead to the initiation or progression of osteoarthritis. Unloading the joint can lead to a reduction in pain and symptoms. When you are walking or simply standing, the shock absorber of the MISHA Knee System will compress and reduce peak forces on the knee by over 30%.
The MISHA Knee System, implanted on the medial side of the knee during outpatient surgery, reduces peak forces by over 30% and has no device-imposed restrictions on post-operative weight-bearing or activity. Health economic analyses have determined that the MISHA Knee System offers high economic value for this younger, working-age population.
Is MISHA Right for Me?
If you suffer from pain in the inner half of your knee (medial compartment), you may benefit from the MISHA procedure. Answering yes to the following questions suggests you may be a candidate for the MISHA procedure:
- Does your pain level limit your daily activities?
- Are you suffering from knee pain despite already trying medication, knee injections, physical therapy, or off-loader braces?
- Are you not ready for knee replacement surgery?

The Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment Gap
Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) is experienced by roughly 18 million Americans, over half of whom are of working age. However, there is a major treatment gap for adults with mild to moderate knee OA: surgeons and patients lack options when non-surgical conservative care has failed, but the patient is ineligible for, or unwilling to undergo, total knee replacement surgery.
The knee osteoarthritis treatment gap has long challenged orthopedic care. Millions of U.S. patients have exhausted non-operative care, yet aren’t ready – or indicated – for a knee replacement, leaving them stuck in pain and with limited activity.
Hear from leading orthopedic surgeons across the country as they discuss the osteoarthritis (OA) treatment gap and how the MISHA® Knee System is helping fill that void in their practices.
