A Motion-Preserving Alternative to Fusion Surgery

Dr. Dean Perfetti Advances Motion Preservation Spine Care Across

New York & Connecticut

Carmel, NY- May 19, 2026 – Patients across the Hudson Valley and Western Connecticut seeking relief from neck and back pain now have access to advanced, motion-preserving spine care close to home. Dr. Dean Perfetti, of Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group, is building a strong regional presence in cervical and lumbar disc replacement, offering alternatives to traditional spinal fusion.

With offices conveniently located in Carmel, Mt. Kisco, and Newburgh, New York, as well as Danbury, Connecticut, Dr. Perfetti is helping patients work toward active lifestyles through surgical solutions designed to preserve motion and support function.

A New Standard in Spine Care: Motion Preservation

For decades, spinal fusion has been the most common surgical treatment for degenerative disc disease. While effective in stabilizing the spine, fusion eliminates motion at the treated level and places added stress on adjacent discs over time.

Disc replacement, also known as Total Disc Arthroplasty (TDA)—offers a different approach.  In a spinal fusion, two vertebrae are permanently joined together, stopping motion at that level. In contrast, disc replacement involves removing the damaged disc and replacing it with an artificial disc designed to maintain natural movement in the spine.

“Motion matters,” says Dr. Perfetti. “I try to avoid fusion. The spine wants motion. Did you ever ask yourself why we fuse the back, but we do not fuse the knee or hip? Thanks to advancements in biomechanics and our understanding of those joints, we no longer fuse but replace them. Arthroplasty and motion preservation is the standard of care for all major joints in the body, and the spine should be held to the same standard.”

Why Motion Preservation Matters

Cervical and lumbar disc replacement is designed for patients with degenerative disc disease who have not found relief through conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or injections. Advantages of disc replacement include:

  • Preservation of natural spinal motion[1]
  • Reduced stress on adjacent spinal levels[2]
  • A quicker return to daily activities in appropriate patients[3]
  • Long-term durability supported by clinical research[4]

Advanced Technology: Matching the Disc to the Patient

A key component of Dr. Perfetti’s success is his use of the prodisc® family of implants from Centinel Spine, a widely studied disc replacement system with published clinical data.  Unlike one-size-fits-all approaches, prodisc® technology allows surgeons to “Match the Disc to the Patient.” This means:

  • A range of implant sizes and footprints to fit patient anatomy
  • Multiple options for both cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) disc replacement
  • Designed to replicate natural biomechanics of the spine

“Every spine is different,” Dr. Perfetti explains. “The ability to align implant selection with   patient anatomy is an important factor in supporting the best possible outcomes.”
